this may or may not be the problem but i have had really bad luck using river sand. i read online you need to wash the sand really well before you add it to any soil because it can have salt or other things in it, that need to be washed out or it will kill your plants.

Not sure if that is the problem here but the same thing happened to my san pedro when i used river sand in the soil

Next time try growing this plant in Fiber Sphagnum Moss. Maybe this will help. My Calea Zacatechichi grows in Fiber Sphagnum Moss. Its amazing how well it grows in Fiber Sphagnum Moss. http://veritas.ecrater.com/
